Wet wipes flushed down toilets were the most common cause of blockages in Yorkshire's sewer network in 2021.
According to data released by Yorkshire Water, wet wipes contributed to 11,996 (45%) of the 26,790 blockages across Yorkshire’s sewer network in 2021.
Wet wipes don’t break up properly in sewers, but many manufactures label their wipes with the word ‘flushable’, misleading the end user to think it’s ok to put these products down the toilet.
Unlike toilet paper, wet wipes contain micro-plastics which prevents them from disintegrating.
Flushed wipes will over-time gather in your pipes and prevent your toilet from flushing correctly, this could lead to sewage backing up into your home through your toilet.
