By August 3, 2023No Comments

Tanker Driver Michael Flanagan has been recognised for his heroic actions which lead to him assisting in extinguishing a house fire in the Deighton area of Huddersfield which saved two people

Michael Flanagan made the rescue attempt after coming across the house fire on Leeds Road in the Deighton area of Huddersfield in June 2022

Whilst heading back to the depot from a nearby tipping site, Michael came across the well-alight property with no emergency services on scene

Without hesitating, Mick stopped at the scene and began to extinguish the fire by jetting until Fire Engines arrived at the scene.

Michael Flanagan was awarded with Chief Fire Officers Commendation from John Roberts of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service in a ceremony at Huddersfield’s fire station.

Michael said: “I could see smoke as I was approaching the property, I made an attempt to get as close to the property with my wagon before jumping out and using the washdown to extinguish the fire”

“Little did I know there was a man and woman inside the property at the time”

“I just acted on instinct and I was pleased to hear on the news that the residents received treatment from the necessary services”

“It’s great to have been recognised in this way and it was certainly a different day to normal”

Chris Page our General Manager said ”Mick WOW. You always go above and beyond but this is truly one to remember – you were a true hero, this isn’t something that happens everyday. We’re so proud of you and thanks. You truly went over and above anyone’s expectations”.
